Before you can book your practical driving test, you will need to pass the UK driving theory test. It assesses your knowledge of road signs, traffic laws, safe driving practices and hazard awareness, and consists of two parts — multiple-choice questions and hazard perception — both of which must be passed during the same test.
We encourage learners to start preparing for their theory test early. Many choose to begin driving lessons and theory test preparation at the same time, helping them progress towards their full driving licence more quickly.

Can I start lessons before passing theory?
Yes. You do not need to pass your theory test before starting driving lessons. As soon as you have a valid provisional driving licence, you can begin learning to drive with a qualified instructor.
Many learners find that learning practical driving skills alongside theory test revision helps them understand road signs, road markings and driving rules more easily. We recommend preparing early so that once you are ready for your practical test, there are no delays in booking it.
Part one: multiple choice.
You must answer 50 questions and score at least 43 to pass. The multiple-choice section tests your understanding of:

Part two: hazard perception.
A hazard is anything that may cause a driver to slow down, change direction or stop. During the test you will watch 14 short video clips filmed from a driver’s perspective, and your job is to identify developing hazards — situations that could become dangerous if they continue to develop. The earlier you spot one, the more points you score.

- A child standing near the edge of the pavement who may run into the road
- A car waiting at a junction that may pull out
- A cyclist moving around a parked vehicle
- A pedestrian approaching a crossing
- Traffic beginning to slow ahead
Top hazard perception tips
- Look well ahead rather than directly in front of the vehicle
- Ask yourself, “What could happen next?”
- Click when a situation starts to develop into a potential hazard
- Stay focused on potential dangers rather than hazards that have already happened
- Avoid random or repeated clicking throughout the clip
When should I book?
We recommend starting your theory test revision as soon as you begin driving lessons. Many learners delay their theory test and then find themselves ready for the practical test but unable to book because they have not passed their theory. Passing early keeps your learning journey moving forward.
