For learners at every stage in Oxford and the surrounding areas

Find out exactly where you are in your driving journey.

A relaxed two-hour lesson where an experienced instructor assesses your current ability, highlights your strengths and recommends the right learning plan. There is no pass or fail — just honest, professional guidance.

What is an Assessment Lesson?

A two-hour driving lesson designed to evaluate your current ability and help you choose the most suitable route towards your driving goals.

Unlike a practical driving test, there is no pass or fail. The lesson takes place in a relaxed and supportive environment, allowing you to drive as you normally would while an experienced instructor observes your driving, offers guidance where appropriate and builds an accurate picture of your current standard.

The purpose is not simply to determine whether you could pass a driving test today. Instead, we assess your overall driving ability, confidence, experience and readiness to progress, enabling us to recommend the most effective training plan for your individual needs.

By the end of your Assessment Lesson, you’ll have a clear understanding of your current driving level, the skills you’ve already developed and the areas that would benefit from further practice. You’ll also receive honest, personalised advice on whether regular driving lessons, an intensive driving course or refresher lessons would be most appropriate.

Many learners find that an Assessment Lesson saves both time and money by ensuring they receive the right training from the beginning, rather than booking lessons or courses that may not match their current experience or ability.

Who can benefit?

An Assessment Lesson suits learners at every stage — whether you’re starting out or already have experience behind the wheel.

Complete beginners

Start with confidence.

Learning to drive for the first time? You’ll meet your instructor, discuss your goals and receive a personalised learning plan designed to help you progress from your very first lesson.

Previous experience

Continue from the right level.

If you’ve already had lessons, we’ll identify the skills you’ve developed and focus on the areas that need improvement — rather than starting again.

Returning after a break

Rebuild your confidence.

Whether you’ve been away from driving for a few months or several years, we’ll help identify the most effective way to continue your learning.

Changing instructors

An independent assessment.

Moving from another instructor? We’ll assess your current ability before recommending a plan, so future lessons focus on what makes the greatest difference.

Preparing for your test

Know where you stand.

Understand how close you are to test standard and identify any areas that still need improvement before taking your practical driving test.

After an unsuccessful test

A clear plan forward

We’ll help identify why the test wasn’t successful, rebuild your confidence and create a clear plan to prepare for your next attempt.

Considering an intensive

Choose the right course.

Often the best place to start. We’ll assess your experience and help you choose the right number of training hours for your needs.

Switching transmission

Manual or automatic.

Thinking about switching between manual and automatic? We’ll assess your current skills and recommend the most suitable approach.

Overseas licence holders

Get familiar with UK roads.

If you’ve driven outside the UK, we’ll help you become familiar with UK road rules, driving techniques and local traffic conditions.

New to Oxford

Learn the local roads.

Valuable experience on local roads, roundabouts and junctions — including those commonly used during Oxford driving tests.

Parents

An independent opinion.

Honest, professional advice about your son or daughter’s progress before committing to more lessons or an intensive course.

Just want honest advice

Make informed decisions.

Not sure how many lessons you need or whether you’re ready for a test? We’ll give you honest, professional guidance.

What happens during your lesson?

Relaxed, informative and tailored to you. There is no pass or fail, and no pressure to perform.

Step 1

Meet your instructor.

Your instructor will introduce themselves and explain how the lesson works — an opportunity to ask questions before you begin driving.

Step 2

Discuss your experience.

  • Whether you’ve driven before
  • Previous driving lessons
  • Practical driving test attempts
  • Any driving experience in the UK or abroad
  • Whether you’re learning in a manual or automatic car
  • Your confidence behind the wheel
  • Your goals and preferred timescale

Step 3

Practical driving assessment.

You’ll spend most of the lesson driving across Oxford and the surrounding areas. Depending on your experience this may include residential roads, busy town driving, junctions, roundabouts and dual carriageways.

Step 4

Assessment of your skills.

Your instructor assesses how you deal with different road and traffic situations. The focus is on helping you improve rather than finding faults, with guidance provided throughout.

Step 5

Honest feedback.

At the end of the lesson your instructor will discuss your driving in detail — highlighting strengths, explaining areas for improvement and answering your questions.

Step 6

A personalised learning plan.

  • The most suitable type of lessons for you
  • Whether regular lessons or an intensive course is more appropriate
  • An estimate of the training you may need before test standard
  • Key areas to focus on during future lessons
  • A realistic timescale for achieving your goals

What you’ll receive.

You’ll leave with much more than an opinion of your driving — honest feedback plus personalised recommendations based on your ability and goals.

Your current driving standard.

We’ll explain your current standard, helping you understand how close you are to test standard while recognising the skills and experience you’ve already developed.
