Complete beginners do not need to start their first lesson in the busiest parts of central Oxford. Training is matched to your ability and can begin in a quieter area before gradually progressing into more demanding city traffic.
As your experience develops, lessons can include residential streets, busier main roads, larger junctions and the different traffic conditions found across central Oxford and the wider city.

Start on quieter North Oxford roads.
For a complete beginner based in Oxford City Centre or Jericho, the lesson does not have to begin in busy central traffic.
Where appropriate, early training can use quieter North Oxford residential roads around Norham Gardens, Norham Road, Crick Road, Fyfield Road and Bradmore Road.
These quieter roads can give a new learner more space to work on:
- Moving off and stopping
- Steering and road position
- Mirror and observation routines
- Meeting and passing traffic
- Simple junctions
- Basic decision-making
Once basic control becomes more consistent, training can gradually move towards Jericho and increasingly demanding central Oxford roads.
As you progress
Build experience around Jericho & central Oxford.
As your driving develops, lessons can include residential and busier roads around Jericho, Walton Street, Kingston Road, Observatory Street, Osney and Botley Road, where appropriate.
Training can then progress towards routes around St Giles, Woodstock Road and Banbury Road, giving experience of more demanding Oxford traffic.
Central Oxford can provide useful practice with:
